Once the American cockroach has reached adulthood, wings develop allowing the roaches to fly for very short distances when threatened or startled in warm weather.
As the American cockroach prefers warm and moist conditions it tends to prefer indoors in colder regions but outdoors in the Illawarra.
American cockroaches will visit or infest residential or commercial, it is a very widespread pest, entering wall and roof cavities, sub floors, sewers, drains, grease traps and garbage bins

German
This cockroach has two dark lines running from the back of its head to the base of their wings. Although this cockroach has wings, it can barely fly and rarely does so mainly when getting brushed off a counter or wall.
Found commonly around human populations, the German cockroach prefers warm, humid, and dark environments.
They can be found anywhere in the home but are commonly found in and around kitchen and bathroom, laundry and ensuite, areas such as refrigerators and dishwashers, inside cupboards, drawers and electrical appliances. Other areas might include bed frames, wall hung pictures, clock, gamming consoles and modems.
Although the German cockroach is occasionally seen during day, especially if the population is crowded or has been disturbed, sightings are most frequent of an evening, when lights are suddenly turned after the room has been in dark, such as a kitchen where they have been scavenging. When excited or frightened, the species emits an unpleasant odour.

It does however have a yellow margin on the thorax and yellow streaks at its sides near the wing base. These markings are clearly defined on the pronotum (shield like structure over the head) and on the fore margins of the forewing.
Australian Cockroaches tend to be more prefer warmer conditions, subtropical and tropical conditions and they are known to fly in warm weather if frighten or startled but only short distances.
They are often seen darting out of sight when someone enters a room and can fit into small cracks and under doors despite its fairly large size.
